Bairnswear 477: Great vintage ladies hood and mittens with easy fair isle design 1940s. This pretty set is knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square. The cosy bonnet is so practical and warm, and the mittens are easier to knit than gloves. Bonnet is front to back 7 inches and round face about 18 inches. If you wish for a smaller fit then use a size smaller needles. The colours suggested are natural ground with powder blue and beriberis (a deep burgundy)

Although knitted  two needles they need to be the ones with points at both ends and are quite fine to provide warmth. Knitted in 3ply pure wool. Lovely retro pattern. This design is very pretty with colourful bands and deep wrist ribbing.  Knitted from odds and ends, so great for finishing up after knitting several projects or buying odd balls for from charity shops. Brown, yellow, red and green are suggested in vintage 3ply. Set of four needles size 13 (2.25) fine because you need a firm fabric to keep out the cold. No chart, just written instructions row by row. There are also instructions for footlets to wear inside winter shoes.

Bestway 911: Great ladies hood and mittens fair isle vintage knitting pattern early 1940s. This super pattern has instructions for  ladies hood and mittens with pompoms. Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square and change needles if needed. Although there is a picture of a bag, there are no instructions for it in the pattern - probably another pattern was produced for this. But as shows this is easy to make - knit a oblong the size required - use an existing bag or pattern - and when finished cast off and attach a lining, fold either in half as seen or in to three to give a flap, then blanket stitch sides and either make a loop and add a button with flap or add a zip and pompoms. This is an easy way to make a bag with any design on the outside part.

Colours suggest are grey ground, blue and white contrasts, but you can choose which ever colour you like - more than they girls could during the war. Often unpicked wool or left overs was all that was available a wool was short and rationed, but often some left over from service knits and baby knitting.

Bestway 1229: Lovely vintage knitting pattern for easy fair isle cap and gloves 1940s. Knitted in vintage 3ply (modern 4ply).Cap measures 18" round. Gloves to fit average hand. These patterns were so popular during the war because you could use scraps to knit them  or you could undo worn garments and make fair isles from them. Wool was so difficult get hold of in colours other than khaki, navy, airforcce blue, black or cream. But many people had odds and ends or old clothes to undo and use up, both baby and children as well as adults. So fair isle, stripes and panel designs were very popular.

The vintage colours suggest for the mittens are grey base or colour preferred, blue and red. These are knitted on quite fine needles so work a tension square in modern 3ply as well or just change up a size. Glove colour suggested are navy blue base, red and white contrast. These colour give you a picture of the colours worn in the 1940s and is very interesting from a fashion point of view.

GSS-19: Fabulous vintage ladies fair isle bonnet and mittens knitting pattern 1940s. This is so pretty and so typical of the times. I even had a set similar to this in the 1950s. Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square, there are several charts for this one. The mittens have gauntlet style cuffs to keep out the cold - great for watching the skiing or nice long tramps through the snow.   Bonnet measures 18 inches round face.

SS44-6FI: Cap and gloves: Great vintage ladies knitting pattern from 1944 for cap and gloves in fair isle. This pattern is to fit an average head and hands and is knitted in 3ply on 4 needles. Always work a tension square. The cap is 20 inches around the head unscratched and nearly 4 inches deep. There are two charts, one for the cap and one for the gloves. The pattern askes for around 60g for main shade and 20g of three contrasting colours. Rust, blue and green on a fawn back ground is suggested. Beautiful design worth the effort.

Worked in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply - this makes them not so bulky as knitting double knitting. The Fleur de Lys mitts were originally worked in blue with white and the bottom lattice pattern where worked in brown with stone. Any colour will do but these will help if you are knitting for vintage authenticity. To fit average hand.

Weldons 813: Great vintage fair isle glove knitting pattern 1940s. This is a lovely pattern with two styles of mittens. These were so popular at the time as they used up scraps of wool and were very warm. To fit the average hands. Colours suggested that would be typical of the time were Natural, red, for the ones at the top and the bottom pair were in yellow, green, blue and red - very cheerful. But as wool was rationed they were more often knitted in what ever was around. To fit average hand - for smaller or large size change needles size. Knitted in 2 needles. Always work a tension square.
